Berge and Malene Hansdtr Gjon. Her father, Ole, was the captain of a ketch that often sailed to foreign ports. He died at sea of cholera during the winter of 1849.

In 1855 Hans Nordvik acquired the Nordvik farm, holding no. 4, from his parents Hans and Barbra Langeland. The latter emigrated to Winneshiek Co. in 1859, taking with them their two youngest children, Mons and Guro.

In 1871 Hans and Anna sold the Nordvik farm and followed the route of Hans’ parents to Winneshiek Co. At the time they had five children, ranging in age from 14 years to 3 months: Kristine (b. 1857) married Stien Hanson from Norway. Children: Steen, Nels, James, Bessie and Julia. Barbro (b. 28 Aug 1860) married Steen Stinson; lived in Winneshiek Co. and North Dakota. Children: Henry S., Sever, Delia, Mina and C. Benjamin. She died in 1924 in Warwick, ND. Hans Olai (b. 1864) lived in Stockton, CA. Ole Johan (b. 1868). Marta Malena (b. 1871) married Mr. Reed. Children: Ada. Myron and Julian. Hans farmed in Winneshiek Co. for around ten years, mostly in Orleans Twp., where he and his family were members of the Orleans Lutheran Church. Two daughters were born here: Ella (b. about 1876) married J.S. Jones. Children. Genevieve and Helen Ann. and Claudine (b. about 1878) married Charles Kerlee. Children: Charles, Edward and Marien.

In the early 1880’s the Nordviks migrated to Ransom Co., ND where land had recently opened up for settlement. Hans farmed near Sheldon. Anna died in April 1881. Her grave marker stands together with a dozen others in a large field between Endelin and Sheldon, all that remains of the East St. Olaf Cemetery. On the stone:

Nordvig, Anna wife of H.H. Nordvig. fod 21 Mai 1835 dod 16 Ap 1881.

Inscription says: Anna Olsdatter Tveit Nordik: Mrs. Hans H. Nordvik born 31 Mai 1836, Norway; died 6 April 1881.

Hans married Kari (or Carrey) Lund in Enderlin, ND in 1886. On 21 Jan 1886, Hans H. Nordvik submitted homestead proof for part of Sec. 25, Liberty Twp., Ransom Co., Dakota Territory. Hans died around 1898.

Hans’ sons, Ole Johan and Hans Olai, raised very large families — Ole near Lodi, CA and Hans in Washington and Alaska. His daughter, Kristine Hanson who remained in Enderlin, gave birth to twelve children.

His daughter, Barbro (Barbara) married Steen Stinson, eldest child of Sjur and Magdele Stinson. (Refer to the Sjur Stinson, Steen Stinson and Morton Anderson stories.) Two sons, Henry and Sever, were born on a farm in Orleans Twp. Then, together with the Nordviks, they bought land in Ransom Co., ND. Two daughters, Anna Madelia (Delia) Anderson and Minnie (Mina) Harmon, were born during this time. Their youngest son, Ben, was born after they returned to Orleans Twp. in 1890. They farmed there for nearly 20 years before moving to Warwick, ND. The Stinson farm now belongs to William McConnell of Ridgeway.

Hans Nordvik’s father, Hans Knutsson Langeland, his wife Barbara Knudsdtr Tysse, and two of their 12 children emigrated to Big Canoe in 1859. Hans K. Langeland died 1876 and Barbara K. Langeland died in 1868. Both are buried in the Big Canoe Cemetery northeast of Decorah.

Anna Tveit Nordvik's mother, Malena Hansdtr Gjon, born 1808 on the Gjon farm in Haalandsdal near Strandebarm, traveled to America to be with her children in 1873. She died soon after she arrived.

Thomas Northup was born about 1779 in New York. He married “Mispah” who was born about 1789 in New York. The story goes that Thomas and a brother, Nickolas, came from Stevenson, NY in 1818. Nick was killed while returning from the trip west. The 1820 census of Cattaraugus Co., NY says Thomas and “Mispah" had 5 daughters. The 1830 census says 3 daughters and one son; the 1840 census says one son.

Frederick Stephen Northup was born 6 Sep 1826 at Conewango, Cattaraugus Co. He became a Doctor of Medicine.

On 14 Sep 1845 Frederick married Minerva Lavasta Abbey, the daughter of Abraham and Nancy L. (Morey) Abbey. Five children were born to them while living in Conewango: Nancy Loraine (b. 19 Jun 1846); George (b. 6 Jun 1849); Frank (b. 11 Feb 1851); Emerson (b. 22 Jun 1852); and Ella (b. 16 Mar 1854).
